Taveuni Rainforest Wildlife
Fiji’s rainforests are incredibly well preserved, since the islands are protected from the kind of expansionism that threatens mainland rainforests. Because of this, not only does Taveuni have a significantly large forest, it also boasts abundant and thriving wildlife. According to the World Conservation Monitoring Centre, the Fijian rainforest contains roughly 164 species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. What’s more, 30% of these animals are found only in Fiji—they can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. Some of these native Fijian creatures include:
- Monkey faced bats
- Orange doves
- Snakes like the Fiji burrowing snake and the Pacific boa.
- The kacau, Fiji’s rarest bird, also found on the Fijian $50 bill.
