Vacation in Fiji: What Makes Fiji Unique?

Most people only take one or two leisure trips a year. These true vacations, lasting a week or more, are precious opportunities to relax, recharge, and spend time with loved ones. Going on holiday is also important for your mental health, productivity and continued motivation back at work. For these reasons and many others, it’s easy to understand why people are picky about their vacation destinations.
There are interesting places around the world that provide memorable experiences and once in a lifetime vacations, but none compare with Fiji. A vacation in Fiji is entirely unique and unlike a trip anywhere else. Even if you’ve visited numerous other islands in the Caribbean or Oceania, you’ll be surprised by what you do, see, hear, and experience in Fiji.
Much of Fiji Remains Untouched Paradise
There are 106 inhabited islands in Fiji, but only 18 urban centers across the entire archipelago. The majority of these towns are found on Fiji’s two biggest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. On the other islands, including Taveuni, you are far more likely to find small villages and untouched jungle, than sprawling urbanity.
It’s still possible to find secluded beaches, intact jungle, and stunning coastline without a collection of restaurants and massive hotels. In fact, enjoying a slice of this paradise all on your own isn’t difficult at all, and many of the top accommodation options in Fiji are found outside the tourist hubs. For instance, on a visit to Taveuni you can find cliff sides to watch the waves roll in or the sunset without other people ruining the moment.
And these untouched parts of Fiji are some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the entire world. That island paradise you’ve been seeking? It’s here.
Fiji Is a Great Place for Families
Fiji is a fantastic island destination for the entire family. Unlike many upscale resorts and tropical destinations that cater only to adult experiences, in Fiji there is a real emphasis on family-oriented fun. There are tours, day trips, and activities perfectly arranged for children of all ages, and many of the resorts and villas offer childcare services for their guests. While the hospitality industry in Fiji has embraced vacations for the entire family, Fiji’s special attention to children and young people is based in its culture.
Community is extremely important to Fijians. This aspect of their culture is apparent in your interactions and conversations with local people, and it forms many of the underlying traditions and values in Fiji, including a deep love of children and young people. When visitors arrive in Fiji they are often surprised by the attention and kindness that Fijians show their children. This affection translates to fantastic family adventures and experiences.
Of course, Fiji is also known as one of the most romantic destinations in the world, and if you are planning a trip away from the kids – then there isn’t a better place to come.
Every Island in Fiji Is Different
Whether you want to island hop for one trip or return year-after-year to a new place, the various islands of Fiji are guaranteed to offer something different. From cuisine to traditional customs, each island has a fascinating, individual identity.
What caused a single island nation to be comprised of such different customs and traditions? The local Fijian population is a smattering of, indigenous Fijians, who likely arrived from people from Micronesian or Melanesian people roughly 3,500 years ago; Europeans, Indians, Chinese and other Pacific Islanders. Each of these peoples arrived with intact cultures, beliefs, and histories. While these separate backgrounds may have formed a cohesive, collective culture in other places, Fiji’s geography spanning 303 islands facilitated the continuation of certain ideas and identities in some places, but not in others. The result is a diversification of today’s Fijian population.
Plus, the geography of each island is distinct. Some islands are fantastic spots for surfing, while others are known as world-class diving locations. You can find awe-inspiring waterfalls, stunning white sand beaches, and gigantic cliff sides over the South Pacific, but maybe not all in the same place. The differing topography and natural scenery is another surprise for first-time visitors to Fiji.
Creative & Captivating Cuisine
You’ve likely had the experience of visiting an island destination only to be underwhelmed by the cuisine and food options on the resort menu. It isn’t unusual for islands to offer a dearth of delicious and interesting foods due to location and availability. However, in Fiji this isn’t the case.
First, the local cuisine in Fiji is incredible. Many of the food traditions on the islands date back centuries, and are a delightful combination of Indo-Fijian specialties. Second, a huge number of the dishes found in Fiji are made from local, fresh ingredients that are found on the islands and in the surrounding ocean, not imported. Sweet potatoes, rice, taro, fish, and coconut form the basis of many foods and are combined in both spicy and complex ways.
At Raiwasa, we are inspired by the cuisine on Taveuni, and across Fiji. Our world-class chefs are focused on gourmet meals that cater to a guest’s preferences and offer a fusion of Fijian and European dishes.
