If you’re thinking about taking a vacation to the tropical paradise of Fiji, you’re going to want to check out Taveuni. Taveuni is the third-largest island in Fiji, with a total land area of 434 square kilometres (168 sq miles). Taveuni is full of lush vegetation and tropical flowers, including the Tagimoucia flower, along with sand beaches and crystal blue waters. Known as the Garden Island of Fiji, it has something for everyone. Here you can find magnificent waterfalls, diving, snorkeling, as well as scenic hiking trails and world-class bird watching. If you want a truly unique travel experience, this little gem of an island has a ton of little things to do that only the locals know. Here are a few truly unique luxury Taveuni travel experiences not to be missed:
Great White Wall:
The Great White wall is one of the best know diving locations. It is a brilliantly white, seemingly glowing coral reef that looks like a very tall wall. Unlike most things with the title ‘Great’, the Great White Wall has earned this term. It describes one of the most dramatic things you will see in Taveuni if you are a diver.
If you check out the Great White Wall, you’ll dive through an underwater tunnel about 90 feet down and come across the sight of a glowing white coral wall.
The Rainbow reef is a popular diving location best known for its soft corals. On the Rainbow Reef, the nutrient rich waters promise a ton of brightly colored tropical fish and plants including barracudas, reef sharks, and manta rays at a site aptly named the Zoo.
Tavoro Waterfalls:
The Tavoro Waterfalls are a series of three waterfalls hidden away within Bouma National Heritage Park on the island. Also known as Tavoro Falls or the Bouma Waterfalls, on the first fall you can climb behind the falls and even jump into the pool if you are adventurous. You can swim under these cascading water and enjoy a natural massage at one of the world’s most pristine environments.
If you stop to swim in the first pool, make sure you continue your hike up to the second and third. The view on the way up is breathtaking. It’s a hike to get up to the second and third fall, so be sure to bring bug spray and sunscreen and a hat, as you might get hot. But you will be rewarded with a swim in any of the three falls.. It’ll be a beautiful walk through one of the most untouched places on earth. The views all the way up are beautiful with lots of flowers, ferns, trees and vines.
Seeing Orange:
A favorite of bird watchers is to wake up early in the morning for a chance to catch a glimpse of the rare and elusive Orange Dove. These birds like to hang out on Des Voeux Peak and the southern part of the island, so pack a lunch and trek through the beautiful jungle. Be sure to bring your camera, as the views here are unmatched in many other parts of the world.
The View:
Many of the Taveuni vacation rentals offer spectacular views from the hill side. If you’re a fan of spectacular views, these cliff-edge accommodations can offer views over the Somosomo Strait, nearby islands, and the vast crystal blue ocean. Be sure to check out the hiking trails all over the island or pick out a rental overlooking the Somosomo strait, which separates Taveuni from the Vanua Levu island in Fiji.
Village Visit:
If you want to learn how the locals live, be sure to take a trip into the village of Naselesele. The people here offer a friendly visit complete with a kava ceremony, singing, dancing performances, and a Lovo feast, which is a traditional way of cooking by heating rocks and heating meats tightly wrapped in palm fronds or banana leaves. Root crops are added in with the meats and covered with earth to be warmed for about 1 hours via the hot stones placed in the pit underneath.
