Top 5 Things to See in Fiji

Fiji is a wonderland of natural sights and experiences. While the entire country is located in a tropical climate, with little variation in temperature from season to season, visitors are often surprised by the diversity of landscapes in Fiji. Throughout the archipelago, there are mountains and coastline, beaches and ocean reefs, surf breaks and dense jungle. And the beauty of these natural features can only be fully appreciated in person.
With an expansive list of places and sights to see in Fiji, the question becomes: where to begin?
Among Fiji’s impressive list of natural wonders, certain sights stand out. These five things to see in Fiji are some of the archipelago’s most beautiful places and memorable experiences; yet, these spots aren’t overly crowded with tourists. These are the natural sights that first-time Fiji vacationers should see, but only experienced visitors know about.
#1: Hike to Taveuni’s Incredible Falls
Bouma National Heritage Park and the impressive Tavoro Waterfalls receive a lot of attention from people who visit Fiji’s third largest island, Taveuni. A visit to these waterfalls, and you’ll immediately agree that these waterfalls are worth the hype.
To reach the falls requires a walk through the lush tropical jungle that covers much of Taveuni. As you arrive at the first waterfall, a mere 10 minutes into the jungle, you will already feel worlds away. Rushing water continuously pours into a deep, refreshing pool among a set of rocks. Here, you can go for a swim and get up close and personal with the stunning waterfall. However, don’t stop here. The other two Tavoro Waterfalls are equally stunning and far less crowded than this initial stop.
#2: Hot Springs on Savusavu
Seeking a way to understand the formidable forces that exist just below the earth’s surface, then head to the hot springs at Savusavu. The small port town of Savusavu is often regarded as the perfect paradise in Fiji. It’s quaint and quiet, but this small corner of Vanua Levu receives enough visitors to have restaurants and some nightlife.
Upon arrival in Savusavu, most visitors, understandably, head straight to the water. Within a two-hour boat ride of the town is the Namena Marine Reserve. However, if you stay on shore for one reason it should be the hot springs located near the town. Located this close to the ocean, the steamy hot springs give a lot of insight into the active, temperamental rumblings that take place underground.
#3: Float on the Upper Navua River
One of the best ways to see the interior of Fiji is by water. Several companies offer rafting trips along the Upper Navua River on Viti Levu. Billed as one of a unique rafting experienced on the planet, your trip along the Upper Navua won’t disappoint. You’ll float through an incredible canyon, past several signs of Viti Levu’s volcanic past (and potential future), and alongside a number of waterfalls. Plus, the rapids along the way are the cause of additional excitement.
Not keen on a rafting or kayaking trip, you can also hike through some of Fiji’s incredible jungle on Taveuni, where coastal walks and jungle treks are available.
#4: Take to the Water
It’s nearly impossible to identify one specific place that is best for diving and snorkeling in Fiji. The crystal clear and turquoise water stretches between islands – beckoning with underwater adventures and an entirely new world to explore. There are expansive reefs and diverse marine life found in hundreds of locations around the islands, and several dive sites frequent the lists of best places to dive in the world. To take on several days of diving or snorkeling head to the islands of Taveuni, where you can dive or snorkel along the spectacular Somosomo Strait, Bequ Island, famous for the Bequ Lagoon, or Viti Levu, where divers love the water off Pacific Harbour and Rakiraki.
#5: Book a Trip to Kadavu
To truly get away from it all, head to the island of Kadavu. It’s one of Fiji’s least developed islands, with a dearth of infrastructure and western amenities that provide a look back in time. It’s a fantastic place to glimpse the Fijian culture, but don’t forget to explore this tropical paradise. Kadavu has several vantage points that offer views over other parts of the island and out to sea. You will overlook some of the most beautiful water in Fiji in total solitude.
