Top 5 Things to Do in Taveuni

When people picture their Fijian vacation and things to do in Taveuni, the first activities that come to mind are out on the water. It is true that any list would be remiss to not mention Taveuni’s incredible beaches and seawater, but there is much more to Fiji’s third-largest island.

The interior of Taveuni is covered in a dense jungle that begs to be explored. Lucky for visitors to the island, there are trails and jungle adventures to keep busy for weeks on end. In fact, it is incredibly difficult to name just five of Taveuni’s top things to do!

#1: Wander Along the Lavena Coastal Walk

If you want to see the incredible diversity of Taveuni island, completing the Lavena Coastal Walk, across Taveuni’s eastern coastline, is the perfect option. This pathway is equal parts relaxing and interesting, with a number of picturesque moments along the rather flat trail.

The walk begins on the beachfront; a perfect opportunity to take in the morning on one of Taveuni’s eastern-facing beaches. From there you will continue past rock-pools and smaller lagoons, there is a swinging bridge and local village, before you arrive at the refreshing Wainibau Waterfalls. As the conclusion to the beautiful walk, it is the perfect place to cool off.

Getting to and from the Lavena Coastal Walk isn’t complicated, but will require transportation from your resort or villa. At Raiwasa Private Resort, our local staff will happily provide proper transportation and further description of this stunning walk.

#2: Snorkel on the Somosomo Strait

While 80% of Taveuni’s land is protected by the Bouma National Heritage Park, it is the protected water’s off Taveuni’s shore that cause the biggest stir among visitors. In fact, this stretch of water is the reason many people find their way to Taveuni, in the first place.

The Somosomo Strait is often called the soft-coral capital of the world. It is an incredible reef that sits close to surface in several places, to offer snorkelers an up close look at gorgeous, colorful coral and all of the fish that call the reef home. It is not only one of the premier dive locations in the world, but an incredible place to snorkel, kayak, and paddleboard. A visit to Taveuni is incomplete without some time spent exploring the Somosomo Strait.

    #3: Discover Lake Tagimaucia

Among all the things to do in Taveuni, few are more interesting than a visit to Lake Tagimaucia; provided, you know the significance behind this beautiful body of water. Here, among Taveuni’s famous jungle is a location of cultural and geological important to Fiji. Over the years, Lake Tagimaucia has become one of Taveuni’s most beloved natural attractions.

Lake Tagimaucia sits in the mountains above the Somosomo Strait. The lake formed long ago in a volcanic crater and still has a fabled quality. However, it is what surrounds the lake that interests most visitors. This is the only place in the world to find the epiphytic flower (tagimoucia flower). Fijian legend says this flower was formed from the tears of a princess, who was forbidden to marry the love of her life. The pretty, red and white flower has become a symbol of Fiji.

#4: Get to the Top of Des Voeux Peak

The path to the top of Des Voeux Peak, the second highest mountain on Taveuni, is surrounded by tropical jungle. As you wind your way upwards, you are certain to find this lush landscape enchanting and, ever so slightly, mysterious. There are also a number of bird species found in the area. However, the true reward for your efforts is once you reach the peak.

The summit of Des Voeux Peak overlooks Lake Tagimaucia, talked about above, and the blue, crystal sea. On a clear day, it is even possible to see Vanua Levu and the Lau Islands. It is a moderate hike to the top of Des Voeux Peak and takes an average three and a half hours for the return trip. It is recommended that you plan for at least four hours, to allow time to take pictures and enjoy the view.

    #5: Do Nothing at All

There are hundreds of adventures waiting for visitors on Taveuni Island, including exploration of the Bouma National Heritage Park, trips to the Tavoro Waterfalls, visit the international dateline, and even see the Wairiki Catholic Mission Church, constructed in 1907. It would be easy to go on and on. However, on Taveuni, there is full permission to do absolutely nothing at all.

The island is breathtakingly beautiful and offers an opportunity to lounge on some of the most scenic areas in the world. While exploration and activities are plentiful, every visitor should take time to sit in the sand or pool, soak up the sun, and do nothing for an entire day, or two.
