Why Stay on Taveuni Island in Fiji?

Visitors to Fiji are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to picking an exact destination. Across Fiji’s hundreds of islands are hundreds of jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring, stunningly beautiful locations. If you’ve decided on Fiji for your next international trip, you’ll soon learn that among the immense number of options a few truly stand out as fantastic vacation destinations. The best of Fiji’s elite destinations is the gorgeous island of Taveuni.
At Raiwasa Private Resort, we are slightly biased in Taveuni’s favor, but this list of reasons to stay on Taveuni is certain to help you see why we love our home island the most.
Discover Fiji’s Quieter Side
Fiji might be comprised of hundreds of islands, yet the majority of tourism is centered in a small number of destinations. During high season, people flock to the shores of the Coral Coast on Viti Levu and the film famous, Mamanuca Islands. But one of Fiji’s biggest draws is that there is still space to explore and spread out. A fantastic spot for fewer crowds is Taveuni.
Taveuni remains an undeveloped paradise. There are good roads to traverse the island’s 167 square miles, but only 9,000 locals living there. Tourism is increasing, but far fewer people choose to stay on Taveuni than bigger Viti Levu. Not only does the smaller population equal less traffic, congestion, and development, but also the villages of Taveuni offer a huge contrast to the South Pacific’s largest city, Suva. Plus, you are guaranteed to find plenty of places for solitude as you travel different parts of the island.
Adventure to Fiji’s Tropical Jungle
When most people think of Fiji the first thing that comes to mind is the beach, but this isn’t always what captivates visitors upon arrival. Fiji’s dense, the tropical jungle is mystifying and magical. The lush ecosystem is home to such a wide variety of plants and flowers that the biodiversity is said to rival that of the famous Galapagos.
Embarking on a jungle trek you’ll find nearly 2,600 different plant species. There is an abundance of large ferns and colorful flowers, with the star attraction being the tagimoucia flower. This red and white flower is only found in Fiji. Even if you aren’t into spotting and identifying the foliage of Fiji, the jungle is enticing for its beautiful waterfalls.
The ideal place for exploring this tropical wonderland is Taveuni. The Fijian government and locals are committed to preserving Taveuni’s jungle, and nearly 80% of the island is under some level of environmental protection. Your adventures in Taveuni’s national parks will be lifelong memories.
Dive and Snorkel Sites Are in Your Backyard
In the real estate world there’s a famous cliché, “location, location, location.” This simple phrase is just as applicable to vacation destinations, as it is to a new home. And Taveuni’s location is outstanding.
Taveuni sits in close proximity to the Somosomo Strait. This narrow body of water is one of the world’s best places for scuba diving and snorkeling. There are multiple dive sites along the Somosomo Strait and Rainbow Reef, and each is spectacular for a different reason. Whether you are interested in underwater corals, vegetation, nudibranch, or marine life – you’ll see it all just off Taveuni’s coast.
From Raiwasa, you can even kayak or paddleboard to several great locations for a snorkel. The equipment is ready and waiting on your private beach, leaving the only thing for you to do is start exploring!
