Fijian Nightlife: Finding the Fun After Dark

Tourism boards, travel agencies, and marketing materials spend a lot of time talking about activities in Fiji. There are blog posts and articles on which of Fiji’s beautiful beaches to visit and what islands are good for hiking and jungle treks. It’s also easy to find information on the popular water activities in Fiji. From scuba diving to simply lounging by the pool, there are options to fit everyone’s interests and idea of vacation.

What isn’t as widely discussed is what happens in Fiji at night. The truth is the locals in Fiji are prone to closing up shop early and heading to bed soon after the sun. Historically on the islands, there wasn’t much to do after dark, and it made much more sense to start and end the day at an early hour.

Even now, you’re likely to find that a Fijian village is livelier at 7:00 am than 7:00 pm. But increased tourism in Fiji and the whims of travelers are providing new opportunities to Fijian restaurant and bar owners. The ability to stay open later and serve an international clientele is attractive in certain locations, and it’s increasing the available of Fijian nightlife. So, where can you find the fun after dark?

Don’t Wait for the Sun to Set

Fiji’s nighttime festivities begin while the sun is still on its way down. Sunset is a hot topic on any of the Fijian islands because the array of colors and incredible light make them some of the best in the world. Where to catch nature’s nightly show is different depending on each island, but you are certain to have a few options.

Whether you are on the Yasawa Islands or bigger island of Viti Levu, there are beaches scattered on the island’s west coast. Kick off your shoes, dig your toes in the sand, and settle in at the water’s edge to see the gorgeous colors reflected on the crystal clear South Pacific water. Not only is sunset on the beach free, it’s one of the best seats in the house.

Another beautiful coastal location is along Taveuni’s cliffside west coast. From several spots on Fiji’s third biggest island, you can find unobstructed views of the ocean. It’s a vantage point that provides splendor, vistas, and you’re likely to have the location all to yourself. At Raiwasa, you can even watch the sunset from our incredible infinity pool, cocktail in hand.

Looking for a Laid Back Evening?

Beach bars and restaurants comprise the majority of Fiji’s nightlife. A version of the classic beach bar, including tiny umbrellas and sitting in the sand, can be found on the most popular Fijian islands. These spots are appropriately laidback, which is par for the course in Fijian dining and drinking.

Besides offering a relaxed environment for an after-dinner drink or two, Fiji’s beach bars typically have a “come as you are” attitude. This anything-goes approach leads to both Fiji’s well-dressed dinner guests and beach bums grabbing a seat in the same bar. No matter which side of the line you fall, the people you’ll meet and the conversations you have can yield interesting stories for years to come.

    Are You Ready to Party?

While Fiji doesn’t have the notorious full moon parties of Thailand or massive clubs of Bali, it’s possible to find fun nightlife on the islands. In particular, the big island of Viti Levu has a couple locations for late night escapades, including a bar scene that serves everyone from backpackers to professional surfers.
Two of your best spots on Viti Levu to find Fijian nightlife are in the Victoria Parade area of Savu, the island’s main city and along the coast of Nadi. You’ll find bars with a steady business and several good clubs in these locations, but if it’s a true island night out that you want then the place to go in Fiji is Beachcomber Island.

Beachcomber Island in the Mamanuca Islands has steadily gained a reputation as Fiji’s party spot. Today, you’re likely to rub elbows with quite a few backpackers in the bars, but there are partygoers of all ages drinking and dancing late into the night in the Barefoot Bar.

Maybe It’s Just Silence You Need?

Perhaps your idea of the best after dark experience has nothing to do with dining, drinks, or a loud bar. Instead, you want the evenings to include peace, quiet, and solitude. You may want to share a meaningful conversation with a loved one or dig into a good book. If so, Fiji is certainly a fantastic option.

Several spots in Fiji can offer silence, but few provide the private experience created at Raiwasa. Whether it’s a glass of wine on our sweeping veranda or a steamy, outdoor bath with your partner – Raiwasa provides absolute privacy for your evening in. Alternatively, grab a snack and head outdoors for one of Fiji’s most magnificent experiences. Star gazing from Raiwasa’s cliffside location is certain to amaze and inspire you.

We guarantee you’ll enjoy an entire night without interruptions or inconvenience at Raiwasa. Come get a week’s worth of sunsets, great glasses of wine, and fantastic sleep at Raiwasa Private Resort on Taveuni.
