Tips for Meditating at a Fiji Island Resort

If you are new to meditation, it might seem like the easiest thing in the world to clear your mind and relax your body. It’s actually quite difficult, and meditation is truly an art. It takes practice, and some effort, to become confident and comfortable with regular meditation. Practitioners in the moving meditation of yoga and stationary meditation work for years to achieve a state of total thoughtlessness.

The benefits of meditation are worth the extra effort. Individuals that engage in regular meditation are known to have lower blood pressure, less anxiety, fewer heart problems, and better blood circulation than their peers that don’t meditate.

Whether you are entirely new to meditation or looking to deepen an existing practice, there’s no better place to start building a regular practice than at a Fiji island resort. However, even in the idyllic environment at Raiwasa, it helps to follow some best practices and tricks for better, deeper meditation. We’ve complied our favorite tips here.

#1: Start with a Shorter Period of Meditation

For most of us, meditation begins as an intense effort. We find a comfortable seat at the Fiji island resort and start to focus on the breath, but within a minute or two attention has turned to the question, “how much time is left?” After several minutes, the mindful and concentration on breathing has morphed into an obsession with how long you need to sit still and mentally counting down.

This is, in fact, the opposite of a healthy meditation practice. To quell the desire to check the clock or countdown the minutes, start with a shorter meditation period. Only set an alarm for a couple minutes. Even better, don’t give yourself a timeframe at all and simply make an effort to set aside moments within the day for quiet reflection.

    #2: Meditate in the Morning

Our brains are better at nearly all tasks in the morning, and this certainly includes meditation. You’ll be able to focus and clear your mind more easily first thing in the morning than at any other point in the day. As well, setting an intention to meditate in the morning means you are more likely to remember and actually set aside the time for the practice.

#3: Include Some Movement in Your Meditation

For first-time meditators, sitting still can be the most complex and difficult part of the practice. Adding some movement to your meditation can help you engage in the mindfulness and focus of meditation, without the discomfort and difficulty of sitting perfectly still.

Of course, yoga is the most famous form of moving meditation. The word yoga has its roots in two different Sanskrit words, one of which translates to concentration. The full definition of this translation is concentration that is unbroken and a constant connection to the object of thought. The forms and progression of yoga is designed to create a meditative practice that relaxes you in the same manner as stillness. At Raiwasa, we provide our guests with yoga mats, yoga blocks, and TRX for stretching and movement.

    #4: Pick a Place with a View

While it might seem silly to suggest that meditation, an act done with eyes closed, should be in front of a beautiful view, stick with us. Choosing a gorgeous location, such as Raiwasa’s veranda or poolside bure, can help you ease into relaxation and find your center. You’ll already feel more at ease and calm with the ocean in sight, so finding your center and quieting the mind aren’t nearly as difficult. Also, when you open your eyes the crystal blue waters of Fiji will be waiting.

#5: Take Note of the Sounds and Light Around You

While meditation is often described as “clearing your mind,” there are other ways to engage in the practice that actually involve focusing your thoughts, not stopping them. One amazing part of meditation is taking note of the sounds, light, and stimuli around you. The sound of waves or warmth of sun on your skin are two beautiful and natural places to send your concentration.
