Logistics Handled: How to Travel to Taveuni

If you are considering an international trip this year, likely a major consideration is how to get there. In particular, people worry that reaching and traveling between islands destinations is going to be difficult or overly complicated. However, it’s becoming easier and easier to reach far off places, such as Indonesia, New Zealand, and even Fiji. You’ll be surprised that reaching the Fijian island of Taveuni is actually simple and straightforward.

    Catching Your International Flight

There are now two international airports in the archipelago of Fiji, Nadi International Airport, and Nausori International Airport. In total, these international airports receive nearly 40 international flights a day, and there are plans for several major airlines to add more flights in upcoming years. Right now the airlines with the most flights into Fiji include Fiji’s national airline, Fiji Airways, American Airlines, Korean Air, Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Virgin Australia, United, Jetstar, and Hong Kong Airlines.

The country’s first and far bigger airport is Nadi International Airport. Nadi is located on Fiji’s biggest island, Viti Levu. The majority of people arrive in Fiji via Nadi International Airport, which is now upwards of 1.2 million visitors. In fact, nearly 96% of these 1.2 million foreign passengers land at Nadi. However, this isn’t just Fiji’s major airport but also acts as a hub for other destinations in the South Pacific.

    Jet-Setting to Taveuni

Once you’ve arrived at Nadi or Nausori International Airport, you’re only a short, domestic flight away from the Island of Taveuni. The domestic airport on Taveuni is Matei, and there are a minimum three arriving flights per day. The flight time is approximately 90 minutes from Nadi International Airport to Taveuni. If you are flying with Fiji Airways from your point of origin, it’s often cheaper to book your flight to Taveuni directly from the international destination, rather than as a separate reservation from Nadi or Nausori.

It’s also possible to charter a direct flight to Taveuni. These flights are usually more expensive than hopping on a scheduled route but provide significantly more ease and convenience. But if you are traveling with a group, then chartering a flight might be cheaper than booking separate commercial tickets. It’s always worthwhile to check the prices on Island Hoppers or Northern Air, the two companies that regularly handle this quick journey.

Part of Raiwasa’s “Black” all-inclusive package includes an escort from your international flight through Nadi Airport, access an elite lounge during your layover on Viti Levu, and a chartered flight for travel to Taveuni. You’ll land on Taveuni refreshed, relaxed, and ready for an incredible vacation.

    Other Options for Island Transfers

You can still reach Taveuni by water, rather than by air. There are regular ferries that depart from Viti Levu each week, with daily options during the high season. The network of ferries in Fiji is well established and safe. Many people choose this longer, but much more scenic, route to the island for the overall experience and those first views of the Somosomo Strait.

If you decide to travel to Taveuni by ferry, you’ll first need to arrange transport from the airport. There are bus and van services that make the trip out to the coast, or travelers frequently arrange for a private taxi service to make the drive. Once you reach Walu Bay on Viti Levu, the departure point for the ferry, it’s an overnight service to Taveuni. We highly recommend booking into a cabin, as it will ensure you are able to sleep and arrive rested on Taveuni.
