What to Expect at the Fiji Airport

The Nadi International Airport is the primary airport on the island of Fiji, and is the place where your tourism journey through Fiji will begin. As a tourist, there are several questions you may have about a foreign airport and how it works, including whether or not the information desks and kiosks will have information written in English or in Fijian.

We’ve compiled a short list of things to expect when you arrive at the Fiji airport because vacation shouldn’t be stressful!

    1. What airlines fly into the Fiji airport?

As an international airport, Nadi airport receives passengers directly from all over the world. You can fly in or out with Fiji Airways, Fiji Link, Virgin Australia, Solomon Airlines, Nauru Airlines, Korean Air, Jetstar Airways, Air Vanuatu, Air Niugini, Air New Zealand, Air Kiribati, and Aircalin.

    2. Where is the Fiji airport located?

The Fiji airport, better known as the Nadi International Airport is located by the coast on the western side of the main island Viti Levu. It is the tourism hub of Fiji and has a massive variety of resorts, activities, shops and entertainment.  The airport itself is surrounded by natural beauty, including rolling green hills and mountains, along with the ocean that surrounds the island a few miles to the west. The original airstrips at Nadi were built by New Zealand from August 1939 and were completed in March 1940. The airport has been standing here ever since.

    3. What is the Fiji airport like?

The Fiji airport was designed to handle an influx of tourists every day while providing Fijian hospitality. This seems like the friendliest place on earth. Like most airports, there is a security line, several terminals and gates, bathrooms and food courts sprinkled throughout, but the Nadi international airport offers a bit more. You can shop here and plan your tours here as well as eat at several full-sized restaurants and bars.

Nadi Airport is currently undergoing a modernisation project to create a striking impression for new visitors. They are doing an excellent job providing state of the art facilities, services and shopping for passengers. As for how it looks now, you can expect lovely tiled floors and tropical decorations throughout.  The featured picture above is one I took in March 2017, it was almost finished and I expect it will be all finalized when the summer comes around.

It’s also a very clean airport, unlike many international airports in the US and abroad. You can expect friendly staff and an easy baggage claim. It’s a really laid back airport even though it can be busy. Either way, it’ll be an easy, relaxing journey as you make your way to your final destination.

    4. Will I be able to understand the language?

Yes. The Nadi international Airport on the island of Fiji handled 1,984,898 passengers in 2014 on international and domestic flights. On average, It handles 97% of all international visitors to Fiji which are typically about 85% tourists, like you! The good news is that English is considered a universal language, and all the signage is written in English. Kiosks at the airport can be translated into several different languages, and most of the people the airport employs are either bilingual or native English speakers.

You won’t have a problem making your way through the airport and onto your next adventure.

    5. What about transportation?

There are several options available in regards to transportation to and from the airport. Like most airports, the Nadi International Airport in Fiji offers several companies that offer car rentals for the tourists that prefer to go their own way and do some sightseeing. If you don’t want to rent a car, the Fiji airport also offers shuttle services to the major hotels and resorts as well as tour busses if you want to get started on your Fijian adventure as soon as you can.  If you are headed to the outer islands (Taveuni or Vanua Levu) the domestic terminal is a short walk from after you clear customs.
